Dr Albena Azmanova is an Associate Professor of Politics at the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies, where she teaches democratic theory and political economy. She did her doctoral studies at the New School for Social Research (New York) and has held research and teaching positions at Sciences Po. Paris, Harvard University and UC Berkeley. Dr Azmanova was born and raised in Bulgaria, where she took active role in the dissident movements and the student revolts which toppled the communist regime in 1989.  She has served as a political consultant to a number of international bodies, including the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.
