The British Academy has launched a new, competitive research funding call, the Sustainable Development Programme, as part of the Government's new £1.5 billion Global Challenges Research Fund.

 

About the Sustainable Development Programme

The British Academy’s Sustainable Development Programme will fund excellent, policy oriented UK research, aimed at addressing the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and advancing the UK’s Aid Strategy. This interdisciplinary research programme will inform the development and take-up of policies and interventions that will improve people’s lives in fragile, conflict affected states, or in developing countries by:

- funding grants that deliver research excellence with development impact, aimed at reducing poverty and advancing socio-economic development

- strengthening the evidence base on what works in addressing sustainable development goals, including what works in different contexts, the interactions and interdependencies between different interventions

- providing the evidence and insights needed to enable policymakers to design and implement effective interventions in developing countries.

Research Themes

The Sustainable Development Programme will support research clustered around three thematic areas:

- Sustainable Governance

- Sustainable Growth

- Sustainable Human Development

Grant Value and Duration

Projects are likely to be up awarded for up to 16 months in duration, with a value total of £360,000. The grant will be paid in instalments. Projects will be funded from 1 December 2016 and ending on 31 March 2018.

Timetable

- The deadline for Outline Applications was 1700 (UK Time) 20 July 2016.

- Host Institutions must approve submitted applications by 1700 (UK Time) 21 July 2016.

- Invited applicants would then be requested to submit a full proposal in late summer 2016.
