British Academy welcomes the Science & Technology Committee report

The British Academy welcomes the Science & Technology Committee report which outlines the opportunities big data presents to the UK. The Academy's submission to the inquiry highlights the need to makes real and consistent effort to engage with what the Government calls one of the 'eight great technologies'.

Speaking of the current quantitative skills deficit in the UK identified in the Count Us In report, Professor Sir Ian Diamond FBA, said in the submission: "Successive governments have recognised the importance of this agenda, but the urgency of this challenge demands that much more should be done. Government leadership is required for investment in, and coordination and evaluation of, interventions across education, employment, research and innovation."
