British Academy welcomes Government announcement on funding support for EU students

News •

The British Academy has today, Tuesday 11 October, welcomed the Government's announcement on funding support for EU students.

Professor Ash Amin CBE FBA, Foreign Secretary & Vice-President of the British Academy said:

“This announcement is a positive step by the Government in providing some essential clarity and certainty to non-UK EU students who are looking to apply to study at English universities in the next academic year. We hope that similar announcements will be made in the devolved nations as well and we encourage the Government to make every effort to communicate this announcement to our European partners and prospective students across the European Union.

“The British Academy would welcome Government assurance to all non-UK EU and EEA students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) that they will be charged the current level of fees for the duration of their studies if they begin their studies before the UK’s formal withdrawal from the EU. We therefore look forward to the Government providing guarantees to students looking to apply in the academic years following 2017-18.

“The British Academy will be pressing for similar arrangements following any exit from the EU and so it is welcome that the Universities Minister has confirmed that international students make an important contribution to the UK’s world-leading universities. It is important to ensure that the UK maintains and builds on its attractiveness to the very best students, and researchers, across the world including from our close partners in the European Union.”
