League tables in the public sector

A forum held by the British Academy Policy Centre on 19 January 2011.

The increasingly widespread use of league tables across the public sector has been identified both as an important means of promoting accountability but also as a cause for concern. In areas as diverse as education, healthcare and criminal justice, questions have been raised about the ethical and social impact of league tables, as well as their technical accuracy.

The British Academy Policy Centre has therefore established a committee to investigate the impact of public sector performance indicators and league tables. This forum was held to bring together a select group of policymakers and academics to consider a range of questions relating to these issues.
