Head of Finance – The British Academy

Salary: c. £55,000 (per annum)

The British Academy is the prestigious home to the UK’s foremost academic experts in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

With a passion to fund excellent research and researchers, to promote a wider public appetite and interest in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and to shape thinking on some of the most crucial topics affecting all our lives, the Academy has championed the Humanities and Social Sciences since its foundation in 1902, and continues to lead, as the UK faces the big global and domestic challenges of the 21st century.

We are stepping up and giving fresh impetus to all aspects of our finance activity and capability, particularly now that our growth means a more modern, agile and effective Finance Department is key to our future success. As Head of Finance, you will be someone with a solid and robust grip of the fundamentals of accounting for, and controlling the finances of, an organisation and charity of our size and profile.

The successful candidate will have full accounting responsibility for the British Academy’s activities, capital and maintenance building programme and subsidiary trading company. The scope of in-house accounting responsibility covers income and expenditure of over £40m (predominantly receiving and distributing grant from government).

The post-holder also has direct responsibility for the management of Finance Office staff and their functional areas, and also has major responsibility for effective co-ordination between the Finance Office and the other departments of the Academy.

This is a permanent position, offered at a salary circa £55,000 per annum. The Academy offers 34 days of annual holiday, excellent benefits (including a defined benefit pension scheme) and one of the best locations in London.
