Newberry Library Awards: past awards

The British Academy Newberry Library scheme ran from 1972 to 2011.

The British Academy’s special arrangement with the Newberry Library in Chicago enabled scholars to undertake a period of research of at least one month, to a total of three months each year, at the Newberry Library with its unrivalled collection in the history of West Europe and the Americas from the late Middle Ages to the 19th century; literature; and history of cartography. The short-term fellowships were open to scholars of postdoctoral level or beyond ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. The Academy paid the scholar's return fares and the Newberry Library provided a maintenance allowance.

The British Academy is grateful to the Newberry Library for the collaboration since 1972 which has, on average, enabled up to three one-month fellowships in each direction each year. UK Scholars seeking funding to visit the Newberry Library may wish to apply direct to Library for a Fellowship, or to consider the Academy’s Small Research Grants scheme for funding to support a research visit.
