On 18 September 2014, 45% of the Scottish population voted to leave the United Kingdom. In his Inaugural Lecture as Chief Executive of the British Academy, Alun Evans gave a personal reflection on the result of the Scottish Referendum one year on and considered how the UK Government and others could build a stronger United Kingdom which manages to reflect the will of the Scottish people.
About the speaker: Alun Evans took up his post as Chief Executive in July 2015, having left Whitehall where he was Director of the Scotland Office. He has previously been Principal Private Secretary to three Secretaries of State and worked as Head of Strategic Communications at 10 Downing Street and as Director of Communications to the former Deputy Prime Minister. After his first degree in Government at Essex University, he took an MPhil in Politics and Russian Studies at the University of Birmingham and is currently working towards a PhD in Modern Political History at Queen Mary, University of London. He is also an Associate at the Institute for Government where he has contributed to a range of Institute projects, including on government transitions, policy making and communication. He is also Gwilym Gibbon Fellow of Nuffield College Oxford and Visiting Professor at the Policy Institute King's College London.
