The BBC seems to be heaving a huge sigh of relief that the White Paper setting out plans for its future did not contain some of the more extreme measures trailed in the media in advance of its publication.
Whenever the BBC's Charter comes up for renewal the fundamentals of the relationship between government and the public broadcaster that turns over £3.7bn of licence fee payers money rightly undergo a fresh examination. But at the heart of this plan lies a proposal which would threaten the independence of the Corporation and take it closer than it has been since the Second World War to being a state broadcaster.
