Chair and Project Director: Professor Ian Campbell

Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) and his wife, Jane Welsh Carlyle (1801–1866), were prolific correspondents as well as famous literary figures. The target of the Duke-Edinburgh edition of The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle is to produce a complete edition of their correspondence in scholarly volumes, with index, biographical notes and full annotation. Thirty-one volumes have so far appeared, completing the edition down to the end of 1856. This major editorial project includes a conference held in 2012 and the Carlyle Society. The eCarlyle electronic edition (made possible by a major grant from the NEH) will incorporate not only existing and future volumes, but material which has surfaced too late to appear in the print volumes so far.
