Extract relating to military intelligence work:

After Cambridge the war found him, like many classicists and other linguists, put to work in Intelligence, only fleetingly at Bletchley Park, Bedfordshire, and generally part of a department located elsewhere and engaged in translating Dutch and Turkish messages. His main reminiscence of the war years, about which he was in any case debarred from communication, was that it was easier to get into restaurants in London.
